Yeehaw a holiday story with Ash and Strom

Woohoo finishing the year strong with a standalone holiday story featuring Strom Coalbeard and Ash Brightspark. These two are in trouble again, this time in a small down where a troll interrupts the holiday festivities. Strom is a reluctant Santa, while Ash has transformed himself into an elf (his regular dragon form would scare everyone). And you get to meet Max the Dog.

After you finish, you can go check out more of their troublemaking in “The Absurd Adventures of Ash and Strom,” put out last summer by The Evening Theatre. The five story series was very popular on their site and I hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy it. Don’t expect anything deep or particularly mature – the two characters are silly and they don’t take life too seriously. Maybe that’s the lesson…

The Absurd Adventures of Strom and Ash:

  • The Misplaced Tower – story 1
  • One Slick Dragon – story 2
  • The Great Cherry Battle – story 3
  • The Megalodon – story 4
  • The Homecoming – story 5

November? How did that happen?

Well it’s been several months since I’ve made any updates to the site. It’s been weird and busy.

I landed two technical writing jobs in August that have 1) consumed an immense amount of time, and 2) sucked the life right out of my creative writing. Luckily, both of those things seem to be waning nowadays. I’ve got a couple of very cool creative writing projects on track.

The first is “Scars, Free” or “Free, Scars,” I haven’t decided which. Regardless, it’s a dystopian thing that I sincerely hope will land a place at Apparition Literature in their “Resistance” themed edition. Readings open in four days, so we’ll see.

The second project is a return to the Absurd Adventures of Ash and Strom. The five part series at Evening Theatre seemed to go over very well. The new episode is a standalone, holiday-themed affair. I’d nearly completed it last December but didn’t have the confidence or really the timing to send it in. I think it’ll be a doozy.

I had to skip NaNoWriMo2018, which was a bit frustrating. Work commitments were just too much for this year. That was a major annual goal for me, but I guess that’s the way it goes.

If my math is roughly correct, I’ve had 17 publications of some sort this year. Several have been Drabble, several have been Flash, two 2nd Places in the Blank Page Challenge, plus the Ash and Strom short story series. Pretty darn happy with that for my first year of casually serious writing.

June / July summary

Well June and July have been very busy! Let’s see if I can recap…

Strom and Ash have been adventuring!

  • The Great Cherry Battle” was put up by The Evening Theatre on June 12th. This is part 3 in the series.
  • The Megalodonis slated for July IS OUT! It is part 4 in the series, so make sure you’re caught up on parts 1, 2, 3.
  • Part 5 will be the series conclusion and will be out this summer.

I was awarded 2nd place by the Judges and 2nd place by readers at Blank Page Challenge for my steampunk flash fiction story entitled “Agent and Smuggler.” Special thanks to Steampunk Journal for posting it as well. I enjoy this genre and may continue to write more stories with Annie and Michael.

I’ve been contributing almost daily to #vss365 on Twitter. It’s a lot of fun and sometimes the only creative writing I get to do in a day. I actually got stumped by a few of the prompts but most of them have been really fun. I’m always amazed by the breadth of interpretation and imagination of the authors on Twitter.

I’ve written a couple of Drabble to be submitted this month for consideration.

I’m writing a flash fiction piece for an upcoming contest.

I’m looking forward to a productive second half of the summer!
